J. Moss Wines is a small family wine business established in 2000 by James Moss and Janet Moss.
James Moss comes from Dallas, Texas where he first was introduced to fine wines working for a large Texas distributor. His work often brought him to the Napa Valley for further education, winery tours and tasting. That is when he began to fall in love with the industry and had the desire to produce his own fine wine that he could share with friends and family and eventually all wine lovers. James decided to move to California in 1998 to follow this dream.
Janet Moss comes from Boston, Massachusetts and moved to California in 1990. Her first job in California was working for the world renowned sparkling wine facility Domaine Carneros. During her 10 year tenure as Business and H.R. Manager, she attended classes at the Napa Valley College to expand her knowledge of wine. She continued to go on and get her winemaking degree in 1999.
Westley Moss is 22 years old and is playing baseball for Arizona Diamondbacks Minor League. This year has been a busy time for this successful and talented athlete.
James’ career in winemaking began with helping out a friend at his small winery. This is where he learned the ropes of the business and soon realized the complexity and commitment it took to produce an award winning wine. He and his girlfriend Janet at the time, now wife, made their first barrel of wine from Merlot grapes grown on the Carneros property where they lived. With Janet’s degree in winemaking and James’ experience with Jessup Cellars, their experimental wine turned into a huge success and the J. Moss label was born.
The success of the first vintage and their dream to produce a full bodied Cabernet, inspired the Moss’ to continue their winemaking with grapes from some of the world famous regions in Napa Valley. James had the opportunity to develop his winemaking skills with the assistance of Gustavo Brambila, former winemaker for Chateau Montelena, Grgich Hills and now part owner/winemaker of Gustavo Thrace.
Every year since 1998, the Moss’ have been producing a small production of hand-crafted wines which were shared with family and friends. The dream of going commercial came to fruition with the 2001 vintage. Since the 2001 vintage, they have been making wine at a bonded facility and to this day continue to keep the dream alive.
Their goal is to produce not just good wines, but great wines from selected appellations in the Napa Valley. Their winemaking style is to produce intense, complex and elegantly balanced wines. The wines reflect the attention to detail of their portfolio, appeal to everyday wine drinkers, connoisseurs and some people call a “cult wine.”
In order to ensure that J. Moss wines will always be of the highest quality, they produce limited quantities from single appellation vineyards of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Total production is approximately 500 cases annually with plans to increase production.
